What is Fake Antivirus?
Fake Antirus, or Rogue Security software, is a form of computer malware that attempts to scare users into believing their system is infected with threats that do not really exist, and then push users to purchase services to clean up the non-existent threats. Fake antivirus is one of the most frequently-encountered and persistent threats on the web.
Signs of Fake Antivirus software:
· Rogue software often generates constant 'virus alerts'.
· You are bombarded with pop-ups.
· Constantly being prompted to purchase their Antivirus program.
· If infected, your computer may dramatically slow down or render some applications inoperable.
· Other signs of infection may include new desktop icons, new wallpaper, or homepage redirected to a different website.
Tips for preventing and avoiding Fake Antivirus:
· Keep your computer updated with the latest anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
· Enable your Windows Firewall.
· Never open an email attachment unless you are POSITIVE about the source.
· Do not click on any pop-up that advertises anti-virus or anti-spyware software.
· Do not download freeware or shareware unless you know it's from a reputable source.
· Avoid questionable websites. Some sites may automatically download malicious software onto your computer.
If you believe your computer is infected by rogue software, don't keep using the computer. This may further damage your machine and provide identity thieves with more information about you. Please contact the technology department if you have additional questions, or if you would like assistance with removing Fake Antivirus software from your personal computer.
